“A painter takes the sun and makes it into a yellow spot. An artist takes a yellow spot and makes it into the sun.” - Pablo Picasso
Artists Working in Education, Inc. (AWE) was founded in 1998 by a group of art educators, museum curators, and artists concerned about the decreases in funding for the arts in education both locally and at the state level.
AWE’s mission is to provide youth in the Milwaukee area with arts enrichment programs to enhance human potential, advance learning and cultivate community. Our two main initiatives are the Truck Studio, an outreach program providing free art experiences for children in inner city parks and neighborhood centers during summer months, and our School Studio artist-in-residence program.
AWE believes that art enrichment activities benefit children in our community. A growing body of research indicates that education in and through the arts plays a significant role in helping children make sense of ideas and their role in society. The arts contribute to the overall learning process by:
Raising student achievement in basic curriculum areas
Reducing absenteeism and truancy
Reducing vandalism, violence and disciplinary problems
Providing new ways of taking in and processing information
Providing meaningful ways to communicate
